I am simply buzzing after my recent travels. What a wonderful way to spend January learning about beekeepers and bees in Bulgaria and then Oman! Back to reality and colder temperatures now, inspired to share all I’ve learned with my own bees!
Life has also got even more exciting as I finally took delivery of my new van! Keep an eye out for me ‘buzzing around’, you can’t miss me as the van is covered in gold bees!
I am working on a book about my experiences and am particularly interested in how different countries are caring for their bees with the global threats of disease and chemical interference. I am learning how a more spiritual connection with bees may be affecting honey harvests and as more and more research is being completed on how the toxic blend of pesticides, herbicides and other environmental stressors can be causing such severe health issues on our bees. This does raise the question of how the same factors could be affecting our own health.
The importance of providing enough forage for all our bees, not just honeybees, is also vital for sustaining current diminishing populations, but also for the importance of pollination. Living in the centre of the cider country, we are all too aware of the importance of wildlife in pollination and pest control to ensure healthy harvests.
I will be speaking next week all about what everyone can do to help bee populations, from seeds to sow, and caring for hedgerows and providing more native, year round plants to feed all types of bees throughout the year. I hope you can join me.
NEW TEA TOWEL will be available soon, showing plants great for British bees.
